Measuring system · SMS · Spring Measurement System
Non-contact measurement of suspension springs.
The SMS captures suspension and axle springs with laser sensors from Micro-Epsilon and evaluates them in InnoMeas. The system finds the start and end of the spring by itself. Loading the spring requires no special knowledge.

Application
Coiled shape, changing surfaces, tight tolerances.
Suspension springs are demanding to measure. Mechanical systems wear and depend on the operator. At Mubea, optical systems available on the market did not achieve the required accuracy and ease of use.
Solution
The spring stands upright between two interchangeable cones; gravity holds it in position. The laser sensor follows the contour of the spring wire and adjusts its position automatically. InnoMeas detects the start and end of the spring and builds the entire spring as a 3D model, with temperature compensation.

Key figures
For springs up to 650 mm high.
Values according to the data sheet. The measuring range is scalable, also for springs outside these dimensions.
- Spring heightup to 650mm
- Spring diameter30–280mm
- Wire thickness2.5–40mm
- Sensor resolution12 / 24µm

Load the spring, measure, evaluate: this is how the SMS works. Captions in English, with music.
What the video shows
- Loading the spring between the two cones
- Line sensors with adaptive position control
- Automatic detection of the spring and tracking of unknown contours
- Automatic detection of the spring ends
- 3D view of the entire spring in InnoMeas
- Evaluation of the wire contour and customisable data export
What we achieve with the measurements, we call Springtelligence.
Spring plus intelligence: measuring a spring is only the beginning. What matters is what the measurement data achieves in your production. The SMS turns every spring into a complete data set that you use to set up your spring production precisely.
- 01
Measure
The SMS captures the entire spring without contact. It finds the start and end of the wire by itself, without operator influence.
- 02
Understand
InnoMeas shows the spring in 3D, evaluates the wire contour and compares the actual geometry with the nominal values: from your database, from a golden master spring or from a reference measurement.
- 03
Set up
The results go where they have an effect: to WAFIOS iQ, into your software, into your database or back into the set-up process of the coiling machine.
